I have an early 2008 Regal 2000 with a Volvo GlSX 5.7l 280 hp drive with 28 hours. It has Faria gauges and the fuel, voltage, oil pressure and temp are together in what they call a 5 inch 4in 1 gauge. My problem is with the temp gauge. Normally the temp needle is bottomed out when cold and at 50% when at operating temp. The last time we took it out the wife was pulling away from the launch and the gauge was at 0 as we went along it moved to the normal operating position. About 12 miles from the launch I looked at the gauge and it was pegged at 100%. I had the wife turn off the motor and I lifted the engine cover. Everything looked OK and there was no strange overheating smell. We jumped out and swam for about an hour to let the engine cool down.
I energized the engine and the needle was still pegged. I pulled the connector from the sensor and the gauge dropped to the 75% position. I pulled out the sensor and put it in ice water. After it was cooled I hooked up the wire connector and grounded the sensor. The gauge was still at the 75% position. I removed the outlet hose from the water pump, turned on the engine and plenty of water was pumping. I took a gamble and we headed back to the launch which was a 12 mile run at 3200rpm. Once on the trailer I opened the engine cover and there was no odor of cooked paint.
The next morning I went out to the garage turned on the key and the temp needle went to the 75% position. I pulled the dash and all the connections seem to be secure.
Am I safe in assuming that the gauge is bad? The gauge is under warranty from Faria but I need to remove it and send it to them for repairs which I?m sure would take weeks if not months. This would leave me with no temp, voltage, fuel or oil gauge for the rest of the season.
Can I just go to AutoZone and get a temporary temperature gauge for the rest of the season? Should I buy a new Faria 4in1gauge and have the old one as a spare? Should I gamble and go the rest of the season without a temp gauge?
