volvo overheating

I have a volvo penta AQ 131D with a 275 drive. Does fine at idle speed but gets hot at higher speeds. I have installed a new impeller and thermostat. I would think that since it cools down when at idle speed it is pumping water, but not enough. I do not know where to look from here. I ordered an engine workshop manual, however it has next to nothing about the cooling system. I would appreciate any suggestions.

When you say higher speed, I assume you mean on the water and getting on plane instead of just higher rpm that it overheats.
Several things could cause the problem, plugged up exhaust manifold not allowing enough water flow at higher rpms, or even a defective thermostat, or partially plugged heat exchanger.
One of the places that typically causes a problem when on plane is the water hose connection on the outdrive. The tip corrodes away right at the hose and sucks air when on plane. At idle (Off plane) it's under water and allows the pump to work normally.

Thanks for the advice. When and if the wind stops blowing I will get on the lake and see if it is sucking air.

If it's out of the water, go back a pull the hose and see if things break loose.

Don, I found the air leak, it is leaking between the top of the intermediate housing and the suspension fork? (bracket that supports and lets the unit swivel) under the hose connection. There must be seal leaking. I do not know how to get to the seal. It looks like you have to take the unit apart. Sorry I don't know the name of the parts, hope you can understand all this.

This is an old thread, but I found an air leak between the top of the intermediate housing and the supension fork. I need help. I do not know how to fix it.

I have the same issue you do and have been fighting it for a while now. I'd start by replacing the gasket under the hose fitting on top of the intermediate. That is where the seal is made.

How did you test it to determine where it was leaking from?

I used a garden hose to force water back from the sea water pump (To see anything was clogged up) and noticed water leaking. Not from the hose connection or gasket but under the supension fork where the unit swivels.

Ya, sounds familiar. The gasket under the hose connection is supposed to make that seal. Even though it leaks below. Like I said mentioned before, replace that gasket and see if it helps.

So, did you replace the upper pivot tube bushing? that's apparently what I'm up against.

I just got the parts today. It has been 20 days since I ordered them. I am going to replace the bushing, it was gone except for about 1/8 of it. I still do not know to replace the bushing. It would help if I knew what to take off. I guess I will start taking parts off until I get to it.

You need to pull the upper and lower off and press out the pivot tube then press out the old bushing. I've never done it but would like to hear from someone who has.

How could you see the bushing? Are we talking about the same thing?
