I'm afraid I haven't done any overhaul work on the older style Volvos, but since you arn't getting much response, here goes. On most lower units, the forward gear comes out with the prop shaft. To get the gear past the pinion gear, you have to remove the pinion gear and pull the vertical drive shaft up out of the housing. Get your self a repair manual!
As far as straightening the shaft goes. Most larger prop repair shops straighten inboard prop shafts, but I don't know if they would touch an I/O shaft.

I dont see it as worth it. Get on Ebay and buy another one. The repair cost would probably be more than half the cost of another one.

most big marine shops have a set of rollers for their hydraulic press. They roll the shaft, pressing it true, and check it on vee blocks until the runout is zero or withing spec.
Every machine shop can straighten shafts, but the shaft has to be removed.

Re: VOLVO PENTA 280 propeller shaft replacement or straighten

The 280's have a single gear on the propshaft (remember Volvo's shift in the upper gear box) that's in front of the pinion. Don't need to remove the pinion to remove the prop shaft/housing (as the OP has found out).

Isn't a job for a novice. You can't simply toss in a new shaft, and re-assemble. The lower gear lash needs to be checked, requiring several special service tools.

The shaft does not play a role in setting the shim value on this particular lower unit.
You can change a 250/270/275 or 280/290/SP single prop propeller shaft without any change to the gear pattern.
This is because nothing will be changed re; the relationship between the driven gear/slinger pump impeller/angular contact bearing/shims/carrier housing "shim stop" shoulder.

All he needs is another 280 prop shaft.
Pull the bearing carrier from the housing, loosen the bearing plate fasteners, remove the entire prop shaft assembly.
Next..... remove the spanner nut, remove the bearing, (the slinger pump can stay on the gear), and remove the "driven" gear from the shaft.
Replace all of these on the new shaft in the exact some order and with the same shim pack (behind the angular contact bearing).

However, the same carrier housing must be used.
The gear pattern will remain identical to what it was prior.

Other than for the spanner nut, no special tools are required.
