Hello,
I have a 19' Sunrunner with a Volvo Penta 290A DP drive. I removed the outdrive from the boat (pain, not as easy as Merc) because the aluminum hose connection on the intermediate case was rotted and the cooling hose would not stay on the stub that was left, I couldn't get at the machine screws either. With the drive removed I can now get at the 4mm machine screws that hold the aluminum hose connection in place, however the stainless machine screws are frozen in place and will not come loose. I have tried everything but heating with a torch. Is heating the aluminum casting the way to go? The outdrive is in very good condition and I don't want to mess it up. I re-powered the boat last year with a 350 chevy vortec 370 HP, it gets super milage as long as you keep the RPM below 3500 . The boat origionally had a 305 chevy 215HP and 180 Volvo outdrive, the economy is almost double with the vortec. Thanks in advance.

Wow, 370 hp in a 19 footer. Hard to believe you could get props to match that kind of power.:)

Out of curiosity, how are you getting that much power anyway? Seems like you'd need too hot of a cam to reach those numbers in a 350.

Not sure what to say on the hose fitting. I know those bolts are supposed to be tight and they aren't very big. I suppose you could heat it but there is a rubber gasket beneath it that could get messy. You say the outdrive isn't corroded, I'd probably try a longer breaker bar. Sometimes it helps to tap on the top of the breaker bar right above the socket as you're trying to turn it.

Hope that makes sense.

Let us know how it turns out.

Next time, don't pull the whole outdrive off. To change the bellows or that hose connection, it's easiest to just pull the upper gear box. Then you will have easy access to the hose connetion also.
With the upper removed, you can get vise grips on the bolts, and heat wouldn't hurt either.
Look at this thread. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309095

Lots of heat from an acetylene torch and a good pair of vice grips and an hour later the bolts were out along with the heli-coil, think I will have to re tap next size up and not worry about the heli coil. What do you think? is it worth the trouble to go the next size up heli coil or just tap the aluminum and be done with it?

I have to disagree with you on that statement. Nothing is easier than the Volvo (AQ Series) to remove from the boat.

in my area that would have been a candidate for a thru hull scoop.
takes an hour and 100 bucks worth of parts.
