Re: Volvo Penta 3.0 GS Keeps Blowing Head Gasket

Got some information back from the dealer. They measured the bolts before putting them back on and said they were all fine. The other news is when they checked the timing they found that the engine was 40 degrees advanced. Seems very odd to me that the engine would even run that far advanced but I guess that could give me my results. I never checked the timing because it didn't sound to be off, I guess I just don't know what one of these little 4 cyls is supposed to sound like. So this is going to be an expensive timing job.
Glastron: I didn't get a true quote since I knew the service manager, he said 3-4 hrs for the head gasket. and probably 1 more for the fuel filter and oil change. If I was to guess I would guess around 800-1000. I"ll let you know when I get the real "damage report" :blue:

Are you sure they said "40" and not "4" degrees advanced??? that is a common setting on timing chain sprockets -4, 0, +4

It looks like you found the real cause of blowing the head gasket and it should work fine this time. The way off timing together with the low octane old gas created severe detonation. I think you should look more carefully at your disribitutor and verify initial timing and advance timing operation at high rpms. How it got so many degrees off? Was the distributor bolt lose? Is the distributor defective?

Glastron: The shop took it out and the gasket did not blow this time. However they said that the engine would only get to 3500 RPM and the module in the distributor needed to be replaced. Is this a specialty marine module or can an automotive equivalent? I found this one for a 2.5L s10 and think it might be the same.
MasterPro? Ignition 2-7052 - Igniter | O'Reilly Auto Parts

The volvo part is 120.00 and I am sure I could install it. What do you think?

Also they said for the gasket, fuel filter, and oil change I am about 700 in right now. This will take it to about 900.

Thanks for the heads up.

I am glad it worked! I do not know if the automotive part will fit. More importantly since this is a ignition part I would go with the Volvo marine part to make sure it is ignitionproof meaning any gas fumes in the bilge can not be ignited to create an explosion.

Re: Volvo Penta 3.0 GS Keeps Blowing Head Gasket

Update:
The shop installed the new ignition module and set the timing. After a sea trial they say it still will not go over 3500 RPM at WOT. Read through the common problems for WOT and the only thing that I thought sounded probable was old gas but I dont know if that would give me 1000 RPM below normal?

Also I plan on replacing the gimbal bearing this upcoming weekend since I can hear it while in drive under load; not a horrible screeching or anything just a sort of bearing grinding. They say that could be putting drag on the motor but I dont believe that could result in 1000 lower RPM either.

Anyone have any other insight?

before the shop repair it sounded from your posts you got easily to about 3500 rpm,s so i guess such things like wrong prop etc cannot be the issue.

something could went wrong on replacing the head gasket and your tachometer now displays wrong - verify if the displayed rpm,s are true. is the speed the boat achives plausible in regards to your prop pitch, gearing and rpm,s ?

aso check simple things like the linkage - do the carb open fully when you give full throttle ?

The shop states that the timing is not advancing properly. We already replaced the timing module, Does anyone know why they would still have a problem getting the timing to advance correctly?

Re: Volvo Penta 3.0 GS Keeps Blowing Head Gasket

the basic timing for the 3.0 GS should be 0 deg - the rest is done by the electronic timing advance and tops out at about -20 deg at max rpm - do they have other results ? afaik the electronic advance works or not assuming the basic timing is set correctly.

cheers
