Volvo Penta 3.0GL outdrive question

I recently bought a 1994 Wellcraft Excel with a Volvo Penta 3.0GL setup. There is a crack in the upper outdrive housing, and the prop doesn't seem to be spinning as freely as it should be.

My questions are:

1. Does anyone know where I can get a new casing without breaking the bank.
2. If I need to replace the outdrive, can I chage it to an mercruiser or other brand that is easier to find and less expensive.

I just bought this boat, and I don't want to but big money into getting it up and going, so does anyone have any suggestions on what my best options are?

Posting some pictures of the Crack, as well as any serial #s you can find, will go Along ways in finding ya some Help...

Since you have a Volvo 3.0GL, the only drive used on them prior to 2007 was an SX drive.

About the only thing I can say to that, is you should have checked it out before you bought it.

No, you can't just stick an Alpha drive on it, You can change it however, but it will include everything but the long block of the engine. New transom shield, shift intrerrupt system, couplers, bellhousing exhaust manifold and riser to match up with Mercruiser exhaust system. Everything.

Thank you for the comments so far. Yes I should have found the crack before I bought it. Unfortunately, I didn't, can't go back in time. I am a complete newbie, and we all learn from our mistakes.

There doesn't seem to be any water in the oil for the outdrive. Is is possible that the crack in the casing won't have an impact on the performance of the boat?

Can I get just a replacement steel housing for the outdrive without spending a ton of money? What kind of price tag would I expect to find on a used casin9 (if I can find one).

I can see the price of a replacement SX drive is about 6G's! (Ouch!):eek:

But you may get the parts you need from these guys...though they may try to sell you the new drives...or the $2400 rebuilt (1.51:1) ones, if the match your specs...

Thanks for the posts guys. I found out that everything was ok. I just have to get a gasket kit, and have the crack welded and I should be set. I think I dodged a huge bullet on this one.

I am out of town right now, that's why I wasn't able to send pictures of the crack. When I get home this week, I'll see if I can get up a before, and an after picture.
