What is the procedure for changing the outdrive oil on this boat? Can the oil be refilled from the top or must it be filled from the bottom like an outboard? Thanks.

Sorry for the double post. Can someone out there explain the various ways water may get into the outdrive oil to make it appear whiteish,I have been using the boat for quite sometime and just decided to check the outdrive oil it may have been this way for a while, but it seems to run great,Thanks Star!

Re: Volvo penta 4.3 AQ430 changing outdrive oil

just did this last week on my friends volvo. what we did was drain the oil, install a new o ring on the plug. reinstall plug. our best shot was refilling thru the dip stick hole. first we removed the cover on the back ( 2 long straigh slot screws ) and removed a vent plug. then with a small funnel we poured in 2 quarts of 90 weight. reinstalled the vent plug and slowely topped off the gear case. should not take much more unless it is a duoprop.

Now I am really confused, Fred.On another post it was said the outdrive takes 10w30 or 10w40 not 90 .The actual motor is a Volvo Penta 430B single prop 1992 the decal on the leg say's either sd cotrim cd cotrim.if that helps.

Re: Volvo penta 4.3 AQ430 changing outdrive oil

Just did this on my 1988 290 SP outdrive. Don't know if yours is similar, but mine has a dipstick on top the outdrive that you check the fluid level with. In order to fill the outdrive, you have to remove the back cover, and remove the fill plug in order to fill/ or top off. Down at the bottom of the outdrive is the drain plug. The manual on mine says to fill with 10W-30, however my mechanic just replaced a few seals, flushed the outdrive, and he added 90W synthetic, told me it's great stuff for the outdrive. I sure hope so!

Re: Volvo penta 4.3 AQ430 changing outdrive oil

woops. just took the clymer manual out. recommended lube for models 100 and 200 is 90 weight. all others have 10w-30 or 40. when we drained it, it was full of 90 weight, and never checked. could be the reason we have to replace the u-joints after 1/2 hr. of operation. no telling how long the wrong oil was in there. damn used boat, can never tell what is going on. cant find a 430b listed. models of outdrives show 100-200-250-270-280-290-sp-duoprop. hope someone else can help.

Same as engine, 10w30 or 10w40. That is the specification in Seloc, Clymer and genuine VP manuals.

Aldo
