Volvo Penta 5.0 Cross Referencing to Sierra Parts Help

Hey guys

My son has a 2008 Volvo Penta 5.0

His birthday is coming and I would to order him a dist cap, plugs, wires, water pump rebuild kit etc. and help him put it all on, even if it has to wait till Spring to do the work.

I live in a remote rural location, so there is no dealer to help me out. I would like to order Sierra parts because they seem a good price ( open minded to an other choice) but I just can't figure out which parts exactly.

Can anyone recommend a site I can cross reference or a simple site I can order parts from and be certain I am getting the right parts. Ideally I would like to order everything online.

At the top of this page, click shop.
To get the right parts, I recommend that you start with the engine serial number-best, engine product number-good or engine model number-might work.
Go to the OEM Volvo parts lookup on this site and get the Volvo part numbers. Due to my years as a marine tech, I recommend you buy these parts.
But I understand some people think they can save money buying cheap aftermarket parts. If this is what you want to do, cross reference the Volvo numbers to Sierra or other cheap might fit parts supplier and order.
This will increase your chances of getting the right parts.
I recommend that you wait until right before your son is going to use the parts to order them. This way if something goes wrong, he will be able to return them.
Maybe give him an iBoats gift certificate?

Thanks for the advice, it's solid. But I am in Canada and Volvo only accepts US customers.

I was on the Volvo site before and I found it just misery to use, perhaps this is why.

Didn’t know there was a problem with our friends up north.
When I log into the dealer portal it’s always to Volvo Penta North America. So I assumed that it would work for Canada. I have learned to call tech support later in the day, because I would get someone in B.C. and they were always knowledgeable and helpful.
Maybe try searching for Volvo Parts Canada to get a site that works for you.
All the manufacturers parts sites can be a bit difficult to learn at first. This is because they have full information. Trust me, you don’t want to use an aftermarket site to look up parts.

Not going against ya muc, but these are ignition components. I would not recommend Sierra nothing, but they are GM parts

Might be able to get those parts from the local GM dealer other then the wires and water pump kit. The water pump kit should be a shearwood but don't know which 5.0 it is

I agree that Volvo doesn’t make the majority of these parts. Part of what you pay for covers the 1 year (2 years if purchased and installed by a dealer) warranty. But part of it pays for the Q+A that they do on the incoming parts. They reject up to 30% of parts they receive. Those parts are returned to the manufacturers and sold to someone else. For the average person I do believe there is value in buying OEM parts.

I do know that on certain parts you can get a better part aftermarket. For awhile Mallory was making a flat top distributor cap that was better than OEM. But because of the inconsistency of aftermarket parts, you really need the knowledge, experience and test equipment that the normal person doesn’t have.

Along time ago, there were a couple of years that I preferred Sierra inner transom shift cables. Even though they were having a issue with the shift slide (easy to see with the naked eye) because they were better. Mercury caught up and passed them. But I wouldn’t use their bellows even if they were free.

My advice is go OEM unless you’re qualified to know the difference. I can’t count how many times I’ve replaced a brand new part that the customer had replaced themselves and had gotten it from GM, FOMOCO or the auto store.

Volvo Penta will let Canadian I.P addresses into their site now and you will have access to the exploded views.... You need to look at the tag on the the engine valve cover and then can track down every part number for the engine and drive.... Some google searching will allow cross reference numbers....
