I have a 95 hurricane deck boat with a 5.0 Volvo penta outdrive. Just bought the the boat and went to put in water last weekend. It started up fine but when I put in gear to leave dock I heard/felt a clunk noise and prop isn’t spinning but on land it spins like it should. I can turn boat off engage throttle and it’s engaged an not spinning like it’s in gear. I’ve checked linkage for shift cable and it seems to be working in both forward and reverse. Anyone have any ideas on what my problem might be

I’d start with looking to see if the sacrificial hub in the prop has spun or sheared, caused by striking the bottom previously.
failing that, when she is on the trailer, take the gear linkage inspection access cover off the outdrive and have a look to see if she is going into gear when the remotes are operated. Easy to tell what’s going on then.

I pulled cover and checked linkage it shifting like it should. I posted in another forum also and got some really good info one of which was as ur saying a spun prop so I pulled it off an sure enough the insert is cracked up pretty good. Another issue that I can cause a issue is the type of oil u fill lower unit with being that it’s a Volvo penta if u use any other oil than than Volvo brand for it the cone style clutch will slip on it causing in to disengage. An as my luck would have it I discovered another issue. That bellow has a few good size holes in it. So now I sit and wait on all the new parts to come in so I can get her fixed up and go have a little fun on the water. I would love to just have a shop do it for me but there’s a 3 month waiting list to even get it in a shop in my area
