I am considering purchasing a 1999 Four Winns 245 Sundowner with a Volvo Penta 5.7L EFI engine. Looks like it has about 220 hours on it. I would like to get people's thoughts on this size engine with a 24' boat. Just curious if it will have enough power or not. The ad says that it cruises at 45 mph with a top speed of 50. Can someone also tell me the horsepower rating of this engine? I've seen around 270, but I'm not sure if that is right or not. Thanks for your input!

Go for a test cruise and see for yourself. It should be ok, 260-270hp should be fine for that size. See how the boat gets on plane and also how it cruises and what the top speed actually is with you there.

i have a 5.0 gl (carbed) 220 hp
on a 24' glastron cabin cruiser
with a dp outdrive it gets up on plane easy
cruises at 30 mph at 3500 rpm
top speed near 40 at 4500 rpms
a 5.7 EFI should do great for a 24 footer

I HIGHLY doubt the 50mph, but it should perform well. Go for a sea trial, and make sure you have it loaded up the way you are going to use it.
In 1999 VP had a 5.7EFI that was also 280hp. It should be called the 5.7Gi. Great engine, actual hp is closer to 300. But it still won't go 50mph top end.

For most people the 5.7 efi would be perfect in a 24ft boat unless you are looking for a big blobk high performance package with a much larger fuel bill. This boat should have enough power fo pulling skiers and large inflatable tubes. I recomend a sea trial if you are not satisfied with anything or if there are problrmbs you will know immediately. a hand held gps will give you your most accurate speed readings and are far more reliable than airguide speedometers.
