HI Guys,

I have a volvo penta 700 electric start outboard, which I assume is 70hp, it is
a triple. I can't find out much about it on the internet but have got it up and
running, new plugs and all that. just changed the gearbox oil today. bought a
large bucket to fill with water to test. what I need to know is this...

I think it's mid - late 1970's engine (I think), I put it in a giant bucket of water
so all the water intake holes were covered in water and fired it up, I was
expecting water to pump out of a spout near the top, but it didn't. So....

1. Do these things have water pumps ?

or

2. Is it the forward motion forces the water through the water intake and up to
cool the engine ?

or

3. Is this top spout thing just for exaust gases ?

I did try putting a hose pipe on the top pipe thing and water does run down it
and out through the prop and water intakes.

I am new to this since selling my jetski a couple of weeks ago and now starting
on boats.

Can't really help much on the details. It surely has a pump most motors it is in the area above the anti vent plate. You need to be sure the water intakes are clear.mud daubers love to build there.Look for a tell tale usually has a hose ruunning to it. near the belly pan.Another place bugs like to get into.
Be sure the lower unit if fully in the water. At least up to the bottom of the mounting bracket. You should try to find a service manual.Usually if there are relief ports on the leg water will come out.

I can't tell you how pleased I was to find someone who correctly referred to the antiventilation plate instead of calling it a "Cavitation plate". You have made my day!

I usually use "antivent(cavitation) plate" as antivent can sometimes comfuse
the less experienced boater.
In my youth 1950s and 60s we allways refered to the cavitation plate.
and props cavitating, and I was exposed to some pretty knowledgeable older guys. outboard racers from the 40s 50s and 60s.I guess terms change and can be different depending on the locale.
