Volvo Penta advice

Ok guys, After an awesome summer with my 19' Bayliner it's sold and I made a profit. I found another boat. 25' Continental w/ volvo penta outdrive. The gm 350 is seized. No big deal swapping the motor and the boat is priced under 1k. What scares me is not being able to run the outdrive. What should I look for being that the outdrive cannot be tested w/ the engine running. I have to make an offer tommorow. The outdrive is real clean and the boat is in excellent shape, the seized motor even looks ok. Ant input would be appreciated.<br /><br />Thanks<br />nh3

All you can realey do is put it in gear and spin the prop to see if it locks. Try both foward and back. Also take a good look at it the housing for cracks or other damage.

Pull the lower unit drain plug and check for any water or metal (tan or silver oil color).

The advice you got is correct. My advice is if you are getting the boat for 1K you better get it. If you "snooze you lose" Just having the outdrive on the boat is more than you are paying for the boat.

Well I just bought an 18' rennken w/ 120 mercruiser. The outdrive is excellent and the motor is back from the machine shop and has to be re-assembled. Nice weekend project for $600. I made an offer on the Continental of $700 and I think I pissed the guy off. Will call him back tommorow with another offer. The Continental would make a nice offshore rig but it's huge! Thanks for the info guys. I will take a closer look at the outdrive tommorow. Have a ? about motor swaps but will make a new thread.<br /><br />nh3
