Volvo Penta AQ130D Electrical question

Hi, I just bought a birch craft boat with a aq130d motor. Motor runs great but on the instrument panel the amp light stays on when the motor is running. I put a volt meter to the battery terminals and at idle no voltage change, but if i give the motor some throttle ie 850 rpms or so the voltage climbs to a peak of 16 volts. I would assume the alternator is working but i could be wrong. When i get some decent weather i was going to trace out the wiring and make sure all is hooked up right. Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The alternator is not working properly. Voltage to low at idle, way to high with rpm.
Would suggest you take your alternator to your local starter/alternator/electric motor shop and have it checked out and repaired. MUCH cheaper than replacing, and they usually look brand new when finished.

Is there a way to further test this alternator? Also is there an automotive replacement possibly?

DO NOT use an automotive alternator, they are not spark protected for use in an enclosed engine compartment with a possibility of a fuel leak.

Understood, As for further testing I imagine if its not charging at idle then its toast? nothing further to test. I will call around tommorow to see if i can find a rebuild shop, Thanks Don S

Thats what the rebuild shop will do. Its not the internals that are the issue.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

That doesn't mean you should put the automotive equivalent in your boat.

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130D Electrical question

Update, I pulled the alternator off there were some ground issues to the motor block, Cleaned the connections, now the alternator at 2000 rpm shows 13.2 to 14 volts at the battery depending on accessories being on or not. The alternator model is a suv marchal a14/35 . At idle it still doesn't really show an increase maybe +.2 or so at idle. The amp light IS still on though. I have searched all over for more info on this alternator but really only shows used on porche's and vw's nothing specific to marine. I found a local alternator rebuild shop but if this alternator is working right i wouldn't want to throw away money, Do these alts have some sort of feature or what have you that makes it so it will only start showing voltage increases at certain rpm's? Also if the alt isnt bad what else could cause that amp light to remain on when the motor is running? I have cleaned the connections at the rear of the boat they were corroded, have not got to the front yet by the instrument panel, Any suggestions would be great.

according to my wiring diagram, the Amp light should have a green wire, and a black wire. The green wire is the hot from the ignition switch, and the black appears to come from the D+ terminal from the alternator. Do you have a manual?

this looks like your alternator. New from Volvo, 120 bucks.

[Why are you so hesitant to take it to a shop to have it checked out?

People here once you mention marine jack the price up by 50 percent, Hesitant yes Thanks for the link heck of alot cheaper for new as apposed to getting it rebuilt locally,

I was surprised to see the oem that cheap as well. Hope it's not a misprint.
