I have recently bought a boat with this motor in it, the block in this boat looks newer than original but is a AQ145A, question is when I fire it up it fires and starts for a VERY short period of time and dies. then sometimes it even shoots a flame out of the carb, I will be buying a manual very soon but in the meantime any help is appreciated, I a assuming the carbs are a good place to start as there maybe blockage at the inlet ports, next question is on the right side my left when I am looking at the motor from the front of the boat under the exhaust manifold there is a inlet port that looks like there should be a hose connected to it as it goes in the block but is missing assumming a hose where does it go as it is open. thank you in advance for any help and suggestions,

Do you give it some throttle after you start it? Those carbs do not have chokes, so you need to give it some rpm to keep it running until it warms up.

You can also go to the link below and download the owners manual for your engine. It also covers basic maintenance and has wiring diagrams.

I have tried many ways with the throttle , I have read these are hard to start cold as there are no chokes, any other thoughts? , I will check out the link too. another question on top of the original. there is a inlet port under the exhaust manifold that goes into the block, on my motor there is no hose attached but looks like there should be . what is the factory starting point for the idle mixture screw , thank you

Hey; I have this Swedish Volvo in my boat. Make sure the timing is good, they do start slow in cold weather but they don't backfire unless the timing is off, they stall and it takes two or three starts before they idle. Three pumps of the throttle and mine starts and runs like a little Mercedes.

Hey; That inlet port under the exhaust manifold is a drain for the block.

Hey Sprogg; The Volvo AQ145 A is from a long line of Swedish 4cyl gas engines, they are based on the same engine that Volvo used in the cars of that era. The only difference is the cooling system other then that the engines are the same(many car engine parts are suitable for the marine engine and are a heck of alot cheaper to buy at an automotive shop then at a marine shop).
I still maintain that you have to check the timing, start with a timing light and make sure the tm is at 6 degrees. If that doesn't work then you have to start from scratch and change the timing belt.

Good Luck
