Volvo Penta Archimedes 3.9 gear lube change

Someone gave me a swell Volvo 3.9 outboard.
I want to change the gear lube to the lower unit BUT there seems to
be only one hole for doing this!
I'm used to having a drain hole and above that a fill hole.
How do I get the old oil out and new lube into the same hole?
Do I drain the lower unit while the engine is vertical then lay the thing on its
side to refill into the same hole like a mother bird feeding her brats?
The manual is not helpful...

Hi,
I also have the same engine, and so far I have not even played with it except to get it unstuck. When you discover how to change the gear lube, Will you be good enough to share the info, please ?
Based on your description, it sounds like you have the right idea. I'll look at mine tomorrow and see if I can figure out another solution.
It must be nice to have been given the manual along with the engine. I have an original color sales brochure showing this and other sized Volvo models. Can we exchange copies possibly?
