Hi iv just bought a Dateline bakini speed boat it has a volvo penta 2L
the problem is i need to know what horsepower it is and i need to get the engine number so i can register it at my local loch
I cant find the engine number at all  but i have found these numbers on the block
"8130 6384 volvo b20 1000 214"
I take it its what they call a b20 engine from what iv been seeing on google ?
Can anyone tell me if its a AQ115 or AQ130 or what have you ?
The engine is red in color
It only has one carburetor (NOT the twin ones)
And it has 4 cylinders
Any info on the boat or engine would be good thank you :D

Both the AQ 105 and 115A were equipped with a single carbureator. The 105 with a side draft Zenith Stromberg and the 115 with a downdraft Solex carb. On either engine, the data plate is just forward of the starter.

Shouldn't be a problem, since a 105, 115 or 130, doesn't have a timing belt. Are you sure you have one?

No m8 i do a good bit of fixing cars so i took it its just a volvo car engine with alterations so i took it it has a timming belt
This is my first boat so iv not got a clue just now
I have grown up with power boats as my dad has had a few sunbirds at South Queensferry the 229 was his last one but he is not with us anymore :(
So all this registering them in loch's and all that is new to me :)

If you have a B20 engine, you don't have a timing belt.
If you have a timing belt, you don't have a B20 engine.
It's just that simple.

Re: Volvo penta engine questions

Another wee few question

The ram for the tilt motor has just been renewed so the outdrive goes up and down as it should
but if its left up should drop down eventually if left up or is there a fault ?

How do i know if its in neutral should i be able to turn the prop bothways with hand ?

Also is it one gear forward and one back or does it go up gears like an automatic gear box ?

I know iv got a lot to learn but if i dont ask il not know sorry :)

Just to let you know iv not had it in water yet as im in the middle of rubbing down and painting it
It does start as the guy started it for a few seconds when i went to pick it up and iv checked the oil and everything and all looks good :)
I know i should not start it out the water but is there a way i can without killing the engine as id like to check the timming and water leaks and everything else ?

The drive should not drop down like that.

The prop should freewheel in neutral.

The drive is is one gear ratio only, same in forward as reverse.

Did the guy you bought it from have water hooked up to the engine when he started it it for you?

Re: Volvo penta engine questions

Neat looking boat!

I would want to inspect the raw water pump impeller. The impeller turns anytime the engine is turning, so add the crank-to-start time in with that 3 seconds running time. Maybe 3 seconds just one time since the boat was in the water or had water hooked up to it and was run is not enough to hurt it, but impellers do not like to run dry. Without water available to the impeller it can pump the lines dry in just a few revolutions and begin to destruct.

Re: Volvo penta engine questions

Surely it would take about or more than three seconds before the water started to get pumped through the pipes even if it was in water is there a way i can check it or do you advise me just to get a repair kit and do it anyway ?

Thanks to everyone who has replied to my thread for all your help and advice it is highly appreciated ;)

I will post pics of the boat when iv finished painting it :)

You could hook the water hose to it at the lower unit with what most call a set of rabbit ears. Any boating store should carry this item.
