Re: Volvo penta I.D.

The numbers you posted are for the shield (transom plate)
Don't know what drive it was sold with.
Good Luck Muc

Re: Volvo penta I.D.

It should be easy to tell the difference between the 270 and 280 as the exhaust ports are very different looking. Your 280 has the narrow horizontal exhaust and the 270 has an upside down triangle exhaust with a rubber flapper in it.

It is more important to have the correct gear ratio. You need to know what engine the used drive was mated with.

Good Luck.

How much newer?

they seemed to begin phasing out the 270 and 280 aroung 1985, but continued with the 275 and 285 for a couple more years along with the 290.

1.61 is the V-8 gear ratio which should be out there. V-8 's were commonly matched with the 280 going back to the mid 70s.

Do Not buy a drive with the wrong gear ratio!!!

Sorry I'm not any help when it comes to serial number.

Re: Volvo penta I.D.

The number 868130 that you posted, is a spec number. As near as I can tell, that is for a drive with power trim, and probably in the SP model drives, much newer than what your original drive is.
Basically, it won't fit. The clamp ring on the upper gear box is probably different, and won't work on your transom shield, along with the H fork on the intermediate section of the drive is different. Plus a lot of other little things I don't remember.
A phone call to Volvo with the numbers of what you have and what you want to try to put on will be necessary to figure it out. There is nothing on the dealers online site to determine the older model serial and spec numbers.

A few pictures of the drive you are looking to buy would help a LOT !!!! in figuring out if it's usable or not.
BUt if it's the wrong gear ratio, it's all a waste of time anyway.
Ask the guy if the drive was from a 4 cylinder engine. If it was (as I suspect, a 131) then it won't work with your 175 engine.

Re: Volvo penta I.D.

Found a rebuilt 280 1983 model that was mated to a small block chevy 225hp , Will this bolt up to my 3.8 v-6 chevy without many modifications?

It might "Bolt Up" but it will have the wrong gear ratio. Therefore, poor results.

Re: Volvo penta I.D.

According to the Volvo website, the AQ175 did come with a 1.61 ratio drive. So, this latest drive you speak of should work as long as you do not have power/hydrolic trim.

Early 90s will not fit.

Hope it works out for you.:)

let us know what happens.

Re: Volvo penta I.D.

Struck out ! Has power tilt/trim will not work. Found a 280 same year as mine rebuilt, same ratio 1.61 mated to a v-8 called a volvo dealer, He said it should work just fine. Thanks
