Just got a 1977 bayliner 350 and 270-280 outdrive.

Unit is in the water and I just figured out were the switch was.
I drove this boat for a while and I never tried the lift till last weekend.

When I press the accessory switch up or down I hear a slight click.
But no motor turning.
When I feel the lift motor it gets hot but does'nt seem to turn.
I'm new to this so is it locked into place or just froze up.

Should I remove motor and check for free motion or wait till I put it into storage for winter.???
Is it easier to trouble shoot this out of the water or in?

Thanks

Re: Volvo Penta outdrive won't tilt up or down

HI,

Well I'm no expert here, but my buddy just helped another buddy with a similar problem.

His problem turned out to be the brushes on the motor needed to be replaced and the commutator resurfaced. Of course your motor or pump may be siezed up for some reason.

It would probably be easyer to remove the motor, check for free turning of the pump/motor and check the brushes in the water because if the leg is trimmed all the way in you may bump your skeg on the ground/ramp pulling her out.

Thank you Calvi,

I looked at it briefly didn't see any area's where the brushes could be replaced.
Was concerned that may somehow it was locked into place and activating the switch might be stressing something.
Controls in neutral eng not running. I would push up or down on switch and nothing but a faint click. afterwards I'd walk back and check the motor and she was hot.
You almost need to people to do this since I can't observe was going on while I'm on the switch.
Also when I press switch up which way is the out drive going?
Then when I press switch down which way does the drive go?
What locks it into position?

Thanks

Hi Don,

I think up should tilt the leg up/out and down would tilt it down/in. I would ask my buddy for more details but he is at the lake right now enjoying the only 3 nice days in a row we have had here(lucky dog).

Post some pics of the motor/pump unit if you can. I am sure some of the more experienced boaters on the forum will be able to help you out more on your particlular set up. I would say that the boat my buddy helped fix is about the same year as yours though and is probably the same set up.

Ralpy boy should be back from the lake on Thursday and if you don't have it figured out by then maybe he can give you some insight into the problem.

I think that when you release the switch it de-energizes both the pump and a valve there by hydrolicly locking your leg into position.

There is no pump.

To test the motor, just disconnect the 2 wires going to the motor. Hook a couple of jumper wires to the motor wires and put them on the battery. One positive, one negative. to change direction, switch the wires on the battery.

If it won't go either way, replace the motor.
