HI guys . I Got a 2000 Volvo penta 4.3 GL with a penta SX outdrive ... I love how it works but a few opinions will be great ;;;; What should I look to keep it in good shape , Whats the most critical parts to check ,,,, Any comments +/- appreciates ..... Thank you

By the way even I had the boat for a few weeks, I did fall in love with this engine & drive, before I had an outboard 83 johnson 140 Hp which is a very good eng but so far I like better this Inboard ... What do you think " Out or IN "

Congrats! You own one of the finest outdrives ever built! First thing I would do is seawater pump impeller replacement, then a careful look at the U-joint bellows...and of course engine and drive oil changes...you get any service records with it?

Our last boat had an 83 Evinrude 140 on it (same OB different color) we had it for 26yrs until this summer. We also like our Volvo I/O, wife loves the sundeck over the engine and also the noise level.

As previously mentioned change the outdrive oil, I'm using Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic in ours. The impeller is on the front of the engine at the crank pulley and easy to change, its about $45 at a Volvo dealer. Try not to run the engine with the outdrive up very far. With an OB you can run at any angle provided it gets cooling water, not so with an I/O its hard on the U-joints.

Thank's guys for your comments . I did replaced the impeller and also the T-stat . I didn't get the maintenance schedule but the previous owner is a friend of mine and I know for sure he took a good care . Drive and engine oil is pretty much new anyway I will replaced in the next two trips ...

83evinrude ... I agree with you the 83 johnson in my opinion is one of the best old outboard . Never had a single problem . Even after 2 years without use it start on one sec and impeller was replaced but it was as new .

I think everyone with an I/O will agree about noise level and look . also for me is easy to work as I know a little about engines

Thanks again for your comments
