I have the AQ130C with 270 outdrive and I am about to take my boat out for the first time after spending most of the summer making sea worthy. I have a question about RPM's. What is considered a safe RPM range for it given its age plus the manufacturers recommendations. I appreciate your help on this.

Re: Volvo Penta question

Well I looked at the shop manual and it says 5500 rpms. However, since it is old I feel I probably will not go over 5000 just to be safe.

First time.. ah, make sure you have all the safety equipment (USCG) and make sure you bring a buttload of tools. Just in case.

Like my Italian grandmother used to say "it'sa you feel, notta you hear". So take it easy at first, feel for vibrations. You'll know if you should be going any faster.

Re: Volvo Penta question

Thanks. She sounds like a wise person. I did take it out last night. I didnt go fast at all. Still trying to get aquainted with everything. After doing it the main focus is just to get it on and off of the trailer without capsizing the boat or killing someone. Like you said. Taking it easy was the key. Everything seems to be in order. Bildge are was dry so I think thats a good sign. The only issue was that the steering seemed a little tight. I am going to put grease in all the joints and go from there.
It was a lot of fun though.

Re: Volvo Penta question

My D model really likes it arround 4200, but every now and then it sees WOT. Seems a 17p is a little small and a 19p is too much. My book says 5100 WOT, but these little engines were built to spin much faster.

Does it have the hardened valve seats in it?

I really dont know. Thats for the unleaded fuel right? When I got it it came with some lead additive so probably not. How fast does your boat go?

Re: Volvo Penta question

34 mph on GPS, turning a 17p @ 5900 rpm 1/2 tank fuel and only me in it.

Normally runs 22-25 mph @4200 depending on load and condititions.

Re: Volvo Penta question

I would be happy to achieve that speed. Given that my boat is so old. I just want to teach my kids to ski. It does seem to run pretty well.
