Volvo Penta running hot

I have a 1999 volvo 5.0 that runs perfectly fine in the driveway with the muffs on, but when I put it in the water and run it, it runs hot. I've just replaced the impeller and am thinking that when the old one dissintegrated, some of the pieces of rubber are clogging up the water intake hose. Is it logical to think that the pressure from my garden hose is pushing water past the blockage, but the suction from the impeller alone is not enough to pull a sufficient amount of water, or should I look elsewhere? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.<br /><br />Thanks

There is probably some water getting past the blockage, and while running in the driveway, you have no load on the engine. When in the water, you are under load and the engine is workiing harder.<br />Yes, you need to get all the pieces of the old impeller, is this a raw water or fresh water cooled engine? All the pieces of the impeller will be after the pump, not in the water pickup hose.

Thanks for the quick reply. It is raw water cooled. I will inspect the hoses on the cooling system tonight.

Might be a good time to check the exhaust risers and see if they are plugged up also. Also pull the thermostat housing and check it for pieces of the old impeller.
