Re: Volvo Penta starting problems
Even without cleaning the old gaskets off, they don't look to be the problem.
What you need to do kind of a leakdown test on the cylinders with water in them. The trick is, you need to disconnect the hoses that go from the manifolds to the thermostat housing, at the thermostat housing. Then hook some clear hose to the thermostat housing and backfill the cooling system with water so the hoses are full. Then do the leakdown test on the cylinders while they are at TDC on the compresssion stroke. Now, pressurize the cylinder with air from your compressor. 50 to 100 psi should be fine. If there are bubbles in the hoses, then you have a leak from the cylinder to the cooling system. Possibly a head gasket, could be a cracked block or head.
