Hey guys, I'm fairly new to marine engines, and found a great deal on a 5.7 omc cobra. My current cobra sx is busted. Could I swap this 800 and the lower in without extreme difficulty? From what I've read everything would line up, I'd just have to change prop to accommodate gear change.

Sure it can be done but why would you want to? SX drive is far superior and I think you would be kicking yourself later

Well, prop locks up by hand about every 3 turns, and I can't get it to go in neutral 🄓

Ayuh,.....Welcome Aboard,.... Yer question is rather confusin',.....

Do you have a busted SX- Cobra in the boat, 'n want to swap in another SX- Cobra,..??
Or,.....
Do you have a busted stringer 800 drive, 'n you want to swap in a SX-Cobra,..??
In other words,...... Where does this "800" come into play,..??
What motor, 'n drive are in the boat, Now,..??

Sorry for the confusion. I have a Ford 5.0 and the OMC/Penta sx. I have a omc 800 just laying around. I'm not 100% certain the SX is busted, the lower definitely is, and I was wondering if the previous gen omc cobra would work without much turmoil.

the OMC 800 and the SX are about as far apart as a steam engine and a jet engine with respect to technology, etc.

the only thing that is common between the two would potentially be the oil and maybe the aluminum alloy. not anything else.

short of a welder, no way to make the parts stick together. there is no way to make them bolt together, or fit together even if you had a full machine shop and $50,000 in materials

so , no, sell your OMC 800 to someone that needs a stringer 800, buy what you need.

I am talking about the entire drive. I know it will bolt right up, and the shaft will fit, just don't know if linkage will work

It's confusing because 800 and Cobra are not the same. It is not clear what you are looking to replace your Cobra SX with. The 800 (stringer) is massively different, whole different hole in the transom. The OG Cobra looks more or less like the SX.
