volvo penta sx-m outdrive will not go into gear

I was on the water sat. and stopped for a minute after several hrs of fun. Went to put into gear and no fwd motion. Loud hi pitched metal on metal sound. towed back to dock. ran in the yard. no noise prop move slowly in gear then stopped. linkage moves fine. drained oil tonight and in was milky. I guess a lot of water. Some fine metal on the drain plug not even discernable except in light. Should I try to change oil or is it toast? Thanks for any help

Did you maybe spin the hub of your prop?

I'd go ask in the engine forums. More ppl to help you there.
