Volvo Penta - temperature problem

I have a 94 Chapparal with a 94 5.0L Volvo Penta FL. I have been having overheating problems the last few times out. I replaced the seawater impeller, which needed to be replaced anyway. After replacing, I still seem to be having engine temperature problems. The temperature does not seem to be constant, which is what I would expect it to do (the boat was bought a few months ago and I am new to I/O's). On idle, temp is around 130-140 F. When throttling up, the engine heats up to between 150-190, but swings back and forth from one extreme to the other. Sometimes, it stays around 190 then I throttle back and let it cool. It sounds to me like the thermostat could be faulty. Anyone else have similar experience?
Thanks.

on the V-6 and V-8 motors its seams to be common to put the stat in wrong

the new stat could be bad you can test it in hot water but it might be less trouble to just get a second one and be sure the parts go in the correct order

tommays

I didn't replace the thermostat, I replaced the seawater pump impeller. So, I do not know if the thermostat is installed correctly or not. But, to you, from what I described it sounds like a thermostat problem, right?
