while pulling my motor this weekend I came across the volvo rev limiter. after searching the forums, I found this post http://forums.iboats.com/showthread....vo+rev+limiter where its mentioned to throw away the "little black box"

Just curious, what is the failure mode, and secondly, is there a better rev limiter that you recommend that will work with the factory VP distributor on my AQ271C? or should I simply ditch the stock distributor for a mallory or MSD distributor?

There is nothing wrong with the Prestolite BID ignition system, except that it has mechanical advance. If the advance works, no reason to replace it with something else. If you have a strong desire to replace it, go to the EST. Volvo and GM used it and it's all Electronic.
As far as the rev limiter, if you don't do a lot of high rpm wave jumping where the prop is out of the air, go ahead and remove it. It's just an add on. It's up to you, keep it if you want, or get rid of it.
