i have a 1993 glastron with a volvo 230 4 cylinder engine, the timing belt broke while cruising about 20 mph, luckily close to shore, i have the shop manual for the engine but i am worried that when the belt broke the pistons might have hit the valves, is this something that might have happened, also i would like to know the reason why the belt broke? the boat only has about 250 hours on it and the shop manual says to change the belt at 500 hours, i would appreciate any help.

Re: volvo timing belt broke

The damege happens only on the 16 valve models that isn't in boats. Change the next one after 5 years not 10. Use OEM parts and don't worry about it.

I have to differ from Sony one the fact that Volvo marine engines won't tap a valve when the rubber timing belt pops. Several of the models don't have the valve relief that others have and will bend a valve. Especially the twin cam OHV engines that they used for a few years. I would just clean the timing gears of rust and install a new belt. If it makes funny noises, run a compression check.

On Volvo engines from the AQ120 A-B through the AQ151 the valves will not hit the pistons. There are different cam shafts depending on the model. For basic repair replace the belt. Make sure the tension pulley is good and not rough when you spin it. Check all three pulleys. The notch grove needs to be in good shape. Odds are you have a leak on front end of the engine from the sea water pump or circulating pump. Check all <br />0-rings on all your copper lines. If you have any questions you can call me at 1-800-949-2189. I have been doing this for a lot of years.

Re: volvo timing belt broke

In regards to this thread, I'm looking at possibly buying a '83 bayliner with the 4 cylinder volvo engine on it, boat cosmetically is very good, and the price seems to be very good. The owner was running the boat when the timing belt broke, and claims the boat runs good other than the timing belt issue. obviously, I want to be smart about buying a boat that I can't run first. I'm hoping the engine in this boat is one that you listed above where there is plenty of clearance and the pistons will not hit the valves. Do you know if this year of boat would be in the right time frame where the engine is most likely safe from damaged valves? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have to buy a boat with a problem? There a thousands of boats for sale out there....find one that has been properly maintained....and start a new thread...you'll get a lot of opinions on this.

-Just my thought.
