Hello Iboaters….
I am new to Iboat and need some help.
I have a 2007 Caravelle 187 LS with a Volvo Penta 4.3 GL-G motor and the Transom is a Sx-alt42 . Trim is on the transom not in the engine compartmen.

This is what is going..
We just bought the boat used from someone that did not know a whole lot about it. When we got the boat home I had to replace the battery because it was dead. After I replaced it I wanted to see what was working and what was not. As I tried the trim button I could here is click in the relays when I tried to go up and also when I tried to go down. I went ahead and replaced both relays just to see it that was the problem. Nope it still just clicked. I have cleaned the ground cables also.

My question is this...
I do not know if I have the org trim motor or if it has be replaced with the newer version 2.
I have found 3 different part numbers (from volvos website) for this unit and I am lost on what number to be looking for.
Do I have to buy the whole kit or can I just buy a new trim motor and replace it?

Part: Volvo Penta 3848796 Replaced by 21573834
And this part number 21945915

Thanks in Advance for your help.

Have you tried bypassing the relays? My trim was doing the same thing after an engine overheat and when the motor was fed directly from the battery, the motor would work. Reverse the leads and it would run opposite. Got to digging and found burned wires from the helm trim switch. Rewired it and works great now.

Also had this problem - twice. Both times the problem was traced to the high amp wire that feeds the pump. First time the plug was corroded - easy fix. Second time it was the fuse that I did not realize was there. In my case the high amp wire goes from the starter to the trim pump, it attaches to the starter through a weird-looking connector that turned out to be a 50amp fuse. Took me a while to figure it out, ended up replacing it with a regular in-line water proof fuse (could not find the original part).
