Don S. Please help!!
I have been blowing 10 amp fuses from my trim switch. I came out of the lake and could not get my lower unit up, kept blowing fuses as soon as I got near the cradle. Someone told me to wrap the fuse in foil and it worked, was able to raise my lower unit to trailer home. Today I traced the wires be on the back side of the motor and found the bare wire touching metal. I repaired the wire, hooked the battery back up and nothing after replacing the 10 amp fuse! Could my 2 relays be shot and how can i check this? You said previously the 10 amp fuse controlled the 2 relays. Please help, Thanks

Re: Volvo Trim problems

It keeps blowing the fuse because 10 amp fuse is the wrong fuse. Had same problem with my 2002 BlueWater. Called Volvo Tech was told it should be a 20 amp fuse in the trim socket back by the pump. Also some 2002 Volvo shift throttle controls were prone to breaking the up wire in the shifter handle.
Rick Byers Yep I am A Marine technician and I really love my work.

Re: Volvo Trim problems

With the short in the wires, you probably burned up the coils in the relays after wrapping the fuse with foil.
You can test the relay coils by checking resistanse on terminals 85 and 86 (numbers are shown in diagram on the relay) you should see around 70 to 100 Ohms through the coil.
The 10A fuse should be more than enough to operated a relay.

Thanks Don,

If i just replace the two relays I should be good?
Could I have removed the relays prior to the foil or would the trim not work at all? I will pick up some relays,
Thanks

Hard to say if that's the problem or not without checking.
If you removed the relays, it wouldn't have worked at all.
