Good afternoon to you guys,
I hope somebody out there can help with a continous problem i am having with my twin 3.0ltr volvo engines (3.0 glp-d), fitted brand new in 2006.
I have been having an ongong problem with the engines cutting out when you put them into gear either forward or reverse. This is even letting the engines warm up to operating temperature.
Things done so far:
1. All fuel filters cleaned out
2. 500ltr fuel tank removed, 100ltr fuel discarded and tank throughly cleaned out.
3. Idle adjustment screw adjusted (not idle mixture as have steel buttons over the screws which i cannot remove)
4. Replacement of plugs and distributor cap cleaned
The only thing that improves matters is if I raise the idle to 950rpm (in neutral), then the engines will not die out? If i try to bring the engine rpm down to within spec they shake violently and just cut out.
I have been testing the rpm with a lazer tacho with the pickup on the crankshaft as my gauges on the helm indicate that the rpm is roughly 400rpm, but the handheld tacho indicates 950rpm!
I am aware that the idle needs to be within 650-750rpm in forward gear, but unless i "goose" the throttle when putting them in gear they just die off, or if they do continue the rpm seems way too low with shacking and rocking from the engines (one is worse than the other).
Since the boat was fitted with these engines it has not been used much only accumulating 60 hours each.
I went to the boat this weekend to try and adjust the idle mixture as i searched on this forum for this type of fault and many say that the idle mixture is the fault but the "anti-tamper" covers on the idle mixture screws will not come out and i fear of causing damage.
I gave up with that one and decided to run up the engines, one fired into life straight away, the other would not fire at all, got spark ok?
I noticed that a crack had appeard on the fuel inlet port of the float chamber!
At this point i am pretty cheesed off as I imagine here in the uk spares for this carb is none to common! I am wondering if it is possible to have it braised??
Any thoughts gratly appreciated as im running out of ideas!!
kind Regards
Danny
