What do y'all think about the voyager pontoons? Looking at a 25' tritoon w/ a 225hp. Motor was repowered in 09 and has 80hrs on it. Interior looks pretty good. Going to check it out this saturday. Anything I should know about them? Any problem areas? Thanks,

David

Not familiar with Voyagers. Biggest question I would have, is the transom rated for a 225hp motor?? I know it is a Tri, but insurance and registration could be a problem if the motor exceeds the rating of the boat. Good Luck, and happy 'toning

Re: Voyager Pontoons

I got a new center log for my rebuild right from the plant in central Missouri have had no problems, was even able to get a 40 gal fuel cell from them made for the log. I have an Alumacraft and as they don't build pontoons anymore this was as close as i could get ( I know what is a little different but now one else dos ) I much prefer U shaped logs over round, not so much stress put on welds.

Re: Voyager Pontoons

There's nothing wrong with a Voyager pontoon/tritoon. My first question is what kind of 225 hp motor are you talking about? 2 stroke? 4 stroke?

Does the tritoon have lifting strakes on the toons? They take a displacement hull and turn them into a real performer. If no strakes, it's just a waste of horsepower, as only massive, inefficient horsepower will get a pontoon over 30 mph without lifting strakes to get the nosecones out of the water. And a tritoon without strakes is not a very good handling hull, however it will carry heavy people loads.

Let us know a little of the particulars.

Thanks for the replies. The transom is rated for a 250 so we're good to go there. The motor is the optimax. I've been reading up on it and it seems like it's a pretty good motor. There aren't any lifting strakes, but I found a boat test for a 2006 voyager with a 225 where the top speed was 46mph and cruising speed was 32mph, so I'm hoping it will be alright. The boat does have underskinning already, so that is a plus. It has a stainless steel prop and a lot of the other goodies people throw on a pontoon. Stuff like a trailer cover, fish finder w/ gps, upgraded sound system (not too crazy), locking rod holders, side ladder, bimini, and the trailer has been completely gone through.

Okay, we're getting somewhere here. A 225 hp Optimax is a good motor, but not nearly as good as the later model Optimax Pro XS that's going to push almost 250 horsepower. And the Pro XS is the one that really gets good fuel mileage.

You might want to go onto pontoonforums.com and repost your original question with these details. Those guys really know their stuff when it comes to pontoons.

There again, I've got one 2 toon boat w/o strakes and a new Bennington tritoon with strakes. I wouldn't waste that much horsepower on a boat that's going to be plowing through the water and eating you alive on fuel because the nosecones cannot get out of the water.

A high quality welder could fabricate strakes for your boat. He could copy the strakes on another brand boat. Voyager might could supply you with strakes off one of their new boats.

Well, I went and checked out the boat and for some reason it just didn't appeal to me. It was in really good shape for being nine years old. Had two fishing chairs up front, two in back, and plenty of lounging but for some reason it just didn't pop for me. I'm not sure what it was. Looks like I'll keep looking.
