VP 2001 5.0GL-C/SX - Crank Position Sensor....needed?

Gents,

I've finished a rebuild of my motor - have everything back in the boat and am preparing an attempt to bring it to life tomorrow. Have a lingering doubt, however. I can't, for the life of me, find the cable for the crank position sensor. I'm far from perfect, but made an honest effort to try and keep everything organized (photos, videos, sharpied ziploc bags) - and have nothing to show for the cable or connector. I also don't have any recollection of disassembling the cable. I double checked the wiring harness - no CKP tail. I do, however have an actual sensor that's integrated into/came with the timing chain cover. So, here's my primary question: Can the engine run reliably/safely without the crankshaft sensor? Secondarily - where does the cable route/plug in to? It seems to be a nice Hall Effect sensor - so I doubt that it would be included to serve as a plug. I have a foggy thought that maybe the crank sensor somehow contributes to mechatronically controlled ignition timing as a function of RPM. Assuming that's the case, do I need to run higher compression fuel until I resolve this?

Many thanks,

Joe

It's a carbed engine, you don't have a crank position sensor. They are on MPI engines only. You have the Delco EST ignition system. Might want to visit the Stickies at the top of this forum for a bunch of Volvo information.
There is a post on the special tool and specs for setting the timing on the EST system.
