Hi,

I pulled the lower leg on my VP 280 to replace the bellows and lube the universal joint and found the exhaust tube that connects VP AQ D40A exhaust manifold to the forward edge of the bellows badly corroded. So much so that it will not hold a hose clamp.

it is part # 22 in the above diagram.

I removed the 4 bolts that secure this pipe to the transom shield and the rubber boot at the exhaust turbo fitting and no results yet. before I get out a bigger hammer, please educate me on the process for removal and it it can be done with out removing the engine.

Thanks for your replies,

B

This pipe should be able to remove with engine in ,only if you have enough clearance in the engine compartment.
You can put some force to the top of pipe to loosen it,it is tight fit to transom plate and probably corroded.

If you have the room????
You might be able to remove it without pulling the motor.
A rubber hammer and tap in both directions.

Update: While attempting to remove the exhaust riser, I put a length of pipe against the transom and gave a pull. It was then I discovered that the backing plate for the intermediate piece bolted to the transom is rotted out and in need of replacement.

I plan on pulling the engine up and forward a few feet to replace the riser and backing plate. A pretty big set back but I remain committed to the restoration project. This boat will be quite the hot rod when I finally splash her this Spring.

This is what I ended up using. My engine was out at the time, but removing the y pipe seemed possible.DSCF0015.jpgDSCF0015.jpgDSCF0015.jpg

Thanks for the tip, I did indeed get a bigger hammer and broke the piece loose, but to no avail. The forward edge of the riser hits the bell housing before it can clear the transom. I am configuring some scaffolding and chain fall combos to pull the engine at present.

Cheers,

B
