I'm preparing for some transom work on our boat and the motor will be coming out as part of that work. The engine and drive (DP-SM) have about 350 hours on them and I figure now is a good time to freshen it up and replace items that might be going bad in the near future.

What parts should I be looking at replacing and what services should I be looking to have done (i.e. valve job), etc.

Just preparing myself for what is coming and want to be ready for it.

As much as I don't want to have to do the repairs, I am looking forward to having great access to the bilge and to the motor to do work, etc.

Ayuh,... That motor should be good for another 1000 hours before it needs freshening...

A Compression test might point out any Issues though...

That's what I am hearing which is cool. Going to check the teeth on the flywheel to make sure they are pristine, the coupler, hoses and do a compression check. I will be able to compare those results to the compression test done a couple years ago.

One note on the compression test. DO NOT do the test on an engine that has been setting for a while.

A leakdown test will give you more information than just a compression test if you REALLY want to know the condition of the engines.
