Would the VP 280 be a straight across swap for the VP 270T?

Engine is Ford (Waukesha) 351 V-8.

BTW: I'm new here and already see that there is such an incredible amount of great information in these forums. I very much appreciate the willingness of those knowledgable persons to share the results of their years of hard work.

The 280 and 270T have completely different transom shields and intermediate assemblies. Quite different IMO.

What's rest of the story? Which drive is currently on your boat?

Thank you for your reply. Currently have a 270T. I saw a 0 hours professionally O/H 280 listed for $550.

The 270T needs some TLC, about $600 worth at shop rates.

Most recently, this;
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=342639

I bought the boat from a guy who jury rigged the crap out of everything. I mean, the guy is an electrician who works on low V systems but still I ripped out over 400 feet (no lie) of wire (wrong gauge, bad splices, no buss, etc etc). I did a sea trial before I bought the boat and it is sound. I just don't trust him to have done any scheduled maintenance and it's been like pulling teeth to get a boat mechanic to follow through on their word.

I've worked on the water for over 30 yrs but I/O are new to me. Basically I want a condition inspection so I know what I have. I believe the drive hasn't been serviced properly and that rubs me raw. There is the normal wear (I/O drive is original to 1985 boat) and then there is the lack of preventative mx. Those two things make me think I need to get assholes and elbows into making this thing shiptight.

My boat is at the bottom of the food chain I guess. It's not a $100K+ 2009 Cobalt so the mechanics won't touch it. That's what I conclude from the behaviors of over 10 shops I've contacted.

I don't have a good service manual and my precious tools are in another state.:(

not quite 99 but close. you should also inspect your drive bellows and be sure the prop actually will come off in case you need to change it on the fly.

I guess If it were me, I'd pull the upper gear box off and have a look at the ujoints. in doing this, you'll change the oil in the outdrive, change the bellows and get a look at the ujoints. Not ready to give up on it just yet.:)

In this thread there is a link to the manual for your outdrive.
