Hi
Just bought an early 80's (can't find the data plate) 70HP VRO including Johnston controls. I had to switch the controls over from left mount to right by opening the control box to move the kill switch and swapping over the gear selector. As far as I can tell I closed the box up the same as it was when I opened it but when I run the engine it won't go back down to idle (unless I manually pull it back to idle at the engine with the cover off. Also lifting up on the warm up lever does not activate the throttle at the engine and it has little (no) resistance) The throttle does work properly when activated by advancing the gear shift fwd or reverse so I know the cable is not stuck.
Did I miss something during re-assmbly of the control box? Does the throttle or gear shift need to be in a specific position when closing up the box? There's gotta be a trick to this as the entire assembly was working on the previous boat.
Any thoughts wud be apprec.

I would say you did not line up the slider thingy inside the control with the slot it goes into, or the cable is not connected as it should be after dismantling it, pretty simple device, but also easy to not have all the right bits in all the right slots/holes.

you also could have a bad cable.

Cable was working before dismantling... and I tried three times to make sure the slider thingy was in the slot, . Will check the cable connections again tomorrow Tks for the thoughts

carefully dismantle the control box, operate the warm up lever while it is in pieces, have a look at what moves, then try to work out what you have not connected that should also move, as I said it is a pretty simple yet quite tricky device. the gear works first, then the throttle when the big lever is moved, the throttle only when the warm up is lifted, make sure the plastic round things on the outer cable are located in their little holes in the case, Also double check just to make sure that just by coincidence the cable did not get broken while it was being shifted around, unlikely, but you never know.

Re: VRO 70HP Throttle Rigging

Having had the control unit apart about 10 times I'm convinced it's not the issue. RE: Tashasdaddy's comment on the cable. When disconected at the engine I can push it in which activates the warm up lever full travel but it's fairly hard to push (I don't have a fishscale tester but would estimate it around 5 to 10 lbs of force to move lever.) Seems like alot to me. Is it possible that the increased friction in the cable is the reason the engine does not come back to idle when neutral selected, and my inability to operate throtle only using the warmup lever?

Re: VRO 70HP Throttle Rigging

Well... my wife's suspicions are confirmed....I'm an idiot,
Took the boat over to a buddy who looked at it and agreed the cable was not the issue, seemed to have something to do with the control box. Noticed the bolt that holds the warm up lever was a little loose, allowing for some lost motion in the actuation of the cable, tightened up the bolt a little (about 1 1/2 turns) and bingo cable action restored.
Well at least I didn't buy a new cable, which was where I was going next.
Tks again for posts
