I have an issue with my 94 with very low hrs.( I have had it 4 yrs, with reg. Maint) smoking very bad at start up, even after warm up i get more smoke than usual on restart.
I have been told that the diaphram may be bad( it is 14 years old) causing oil to seep after shut off.
It tapers off after running but, the oil seepage theory seems logical because of the heavy smoke at restart when warm.

May I ask a few?

1)Is this diaphram in the oil pump or the VRO?
2) Is this rebuildable or replacement of whole thing?
3)Is the oil pump, the unit mounted behind the oil tank, on the transom?
4) what are thoughts on going premix?
5) In these environmentally sensative days it gets embarrasing, will synthetic oil smoke less?

Thanks

Thx,
I am a regular user of Seafoam to keep the carbon knocked off pistons.

Your vro pump is a dual piston diaphragm actuated pump.It is not uncommon to experience seepage after a period between the fuel and oil chamber seal, causing an oil rich condition at initial startup.Had the same symptom that got progressively worse on my 96'.I disabled mine several years ago and am still running the original vro pump as it works just fine as a 50:1 pumper.

Its very likely that your recirculation check valves are all blocked solid. Test them.

Here is a good link for information and diagrams on the VRO.

My opinion of the VRO; the good stuff survives and becomes the industry standard. The VRO did not make the cut.

Thanks Ezeke, Great link for VRO explanation. It seems to me that if you go premix on a small tank it is something you could manage. With larger tanks it gets dicey.

Some one posted " good technology stays for the long run, the VRO didn't make the cut".
For that matter, I guess you could make a similar generalization for 2 cycles but, they are going to be pushing watercraft for years to come and VRO's will be pumping.

Not to belabor the issue , but most of the mixing pumps on OMC's more recent motors were not variable or VOR pumps.

My tank is fifty gallons, and I have no trouble getting oil in that, I put stabilizer in every time I buy fresh fuel, so the oil is just one more thing in my funnel.

At no time was the manufacture of 2 stroke engines phased out because of lack of success of the design. It was rather an industry-wide push to try to improve emiission control.

i have an 1988 88spl which is the 90hp without the Vro . have a 25 gallon built in tank. i like exeke, have to premix, and use seafoam. i estimate by the fuel guage the amount of gas i will need, and add most of the oil & seafoam first, then fill and add the rest. it' no different than mixing in a 6 gallon tank.
