Few wks ago my 87 johnson 140 had no alarm test sound on start up, thanks to forum help I found the actual alarm itself was not working. By the way the pump has the newer 4 wire upgrade. Now my new question is: at ignition it gives an audible sound that I would describe as more of a whistle, not loud but enough to hear(it was installed correctly with the new 4- 3/16 holes) Then for the heck of it I take the old horn & while making actual contact with batt. terminal on one prong of the horn and a short wire to the other terminal on the battery it sounds loud enough to hear a block away?????I am only guessing the more direct current on it makes it work again. Im sure someone has noticed this too.. Just want some re-assurance that all is well. Thanks, Dave

Re: vro alarm/whistle is it working right??

Dave,

I have an 86 150 that I had to change the warning horn out on last year (not the cheapest little buggers are they). The one I used is the like the one you described where I had to drill 4 hole in the side of the control box. The new horn is not nearly as loud as the old one, but I still find that it is audible even at WOT. When I turn the ignition on it gives me a little chirp just to show its working. If you want to hear how loud it will be when actually being activated by an alarm, you could always manually activate it by turning on the ignition and grounding one of the tan wires under the motor cowling ( temp, fuel restriction, low oil, VRO/OMS no oil). This will also tell you that you have a good circuit to the warning horn.

Thanks, that was my big question on the loudness issue, sounds like I am OK with my wire and installation. Will do the other test too. Yes it is pricey for what the kit is but thats a boat for you!! I called omc tech too , he told me its considerally less loud that original. Thanks again, Dave
