VRO Failure- What are the symtoms? Quick death or slow failure.

Title says it all. My engine is a 1995 150 EXEOM. Been chasing alarms but now suspect imminent VRO failure. Will it be intermittent or sudden ? Will it set off the vacuum alarm if there is a fuel delivery issue or the no oil alarm if it is not pumping oil? Will it run lean on fuel if fuel side is bad? Will it only pump a little oil if oil side is bad? Will the vacuum alarm indicate a failing VRO or only a fuel restriction to the pump?

my 150 vro seemed to quit immediatly, alarms worked. but I had just bought mine and there was silicone on as a gasket,so someone had worked on it before. the fuel pump on a vro can be rebuilt but oil pump can't, i was told and able to confirm as parts weren't available.do you suspect a problem?

I suspect a problem but not sure if it is VRO failure or false alarm problem.

You should start mixing 50:1 fuel in your tank until you get the prob resolved.

My VRO gave no symptom I can remember. The motor ran wonderfully. Then one day I took my kids tubing, and the motor just shut off after 5 minutes. It would run at idle for a few minutes, we'd open it up, and it would die again. I thought fuel pump, electrical heating, etc. But it ended up that the VRO died, the horn also wasn't working, and the motor would just get hot and seize. Buy a conventional pump, mix the gas, don't wait! My '85 Evinrude 90 would be fine right now had I listen to this advice. Most of us can't put enough hours on a marine engine to wear it out. Your VRO will turn on you just when you trust it. She's evil.

I have a 95 v4 115hp horse. Today, I put 50:1 oil in fuel tank like recommended here and disconnected the oil hose, first with nothing connected to the inlet, then with a vacuum cap. Both times ran engine about 2-3 minutes and no alarm went on. Clean the 4 wires and same results with no sound. That was the end of VRO for me.

This artlcle may help you understand how the system works and why the pump gets the blame for almost any engine problem. many uneducated mechanics are quick to blame something they know nothing about.

Thank you. I have read the article . It really does not address my question though. I have noticed on my last outing and several others before that oil consumption was really low. So I am still curious of my original questions. Does it just die or may it become intermittent or just slowly pump less and less?
