I was looking at a used boat with a 40HP Evinrude with VRO. What is the longterm relabilty of this system? Model number is VE40TLESR and serial number is G02562391.

Thanks,
Terry

This should answer your questions and is worth a read.

Your VRO2 system is reliable if maintained properly and understood. Update it periodically as per your service manual. Keep the oil tank clean, and check the boats fuel system for leaks and restrictions. They are often needlessly replaced and blamed when the real problem was never fully determined. IF a problem does arise, you can upgrade to the new OMS pump, look under "System Upgrades" in the link for the applicable part numbers, or pre mix as many others do.

Re: VRO oiling reliability

I have a 89 40 hp. and it is very reliable. Mine was updated to the new OMS pump last year as I did not fully troubleshoot what I thought was a fuel pump side failure, as HighTrim notes. It seems the VRO is a love/hate issue, depending on who you talk to. Read the link HighTrim sent, very informative. Anyway, I like it.
