VRO pump failure

Hope everytone had a great thanksgiving!<br />I've got an E150TXCOS that quit on me Saturday on my way out of the marina. It ran fine Friday night but...... any how, Determined it wasn't getting any fuel and had to continually pump the ball to get back to the dock. I was thinking fuel pump but I had time (since my fishing trip went South) so I changed the fuel/water separator and an in line filter and checked all the hoses for possible leakage/ kinks. Found a line going into the bottom of the pump from the block that didn't look to good and replaced it. Fired the thing up on the flush and it still ran itself out of fuel. I'm back to thinking fuel pump. The VRO was disconnected before I aquired the boat and I've been mixing 50 to 1. Since I have no oil tank and the motor's kinda old (without getting into the whole VRO discussion) is there a replacement fuel pump without VRO that I can use?

yes<br /> it looks identical and mounts the same just no oil circuits.<br /> any jonnyrude dealer can hook you up.<br /> there is also a diaphram kit avalible if all that is wrong is the fuel side diaphram.

BTW, how rebuildable is that VRO pump? I'm guessing a replacement is around $150. Is there anything else I should check out to eliminate as a culprit prior to replacing/rebuilding VRO pump?

Thanks for the advice rodbolt. I installed the non-VRO replacement pump last night. Very easy job! Ran the motor on a flush and it worked fine. I'm looking forward to taking her out this weekend and see how she does at higher RPMs but, I think I got it licked! Thanks again.

Did a new pulse limiter come with the pump?

Yes, there was one in the box. I couldn't figure out where it went. The instructions were not clear on that. The pulse port coming out of the block is just a straight tube. I hooked the pulse hose directly to it. I didn't see an existing pulse limiter or anything that looked like the one provided.

It goes in the middle of the line from that fitting if it has a barbed end on both sides. That fitting in the block half should have a piece of metal in it. Without a pulse limiter its possible youll burn the new pump. Its possible for fire to come back thru that line and burn the diaphram. That may have been what caused the demise of the first pump.

Thank you Dhadley! I'll check that before I run it anymore. I'll let you know how it goes. The one that came with the pump has threads on one end, barbed on the other. I take it there is an in line version?

It depends on which one came in the kit but on a crossflow theres not much room in there. If theres room to unscrew the one in the block now and put in the one that came with the kit, I'd sure do that. But yes, there is an in-line version. <br /><br />If the one that came in the kit is the one I think it is, I dont think theres room to screw it in where the brass fitting is now.

Dhadley, you're right. No space for the thing to screw in. There's barely enough room to get a hose clamp in there. I'll look into the in-line today. I sure do appreciate your help.

On an older crossflow block like yours, you have to remove the fitting in the block and replace it with a regular brass nipple. Two 90 degree molded hose pieces are installed with the new (blue faced) anti-backfire valve between then, then the other end fastened to the pulse fitting on the pump. The new pulse limiter, anti-backfire valve, has a nipple on each end for the hoses.<br /><br />See a dealer, those parts are included in certain VRO kits and not used on most motors. Perhaps the mechanic has those pieces you need just lying around and you can get them for next to nothing, or a 6-pack, or a pizza, etc.
