VRO question, I have oil in my fuel line?

Late 80's 60hp Johnson VRO

So here's the story,
after sitting for the winter I tried to start the boat... wouldn't start... I found the carbs full of oil, the fuel filter full of oil, the fuel side of the VRO full of oil, and the fuel line also had oil in it, it had backed up into the fuel line about 2 feet or so.

The motor seemed to run ok after all the oil was drained out and fresh gas pumped in.

Wondering how it happened in the first place and do I need to replace the pump?
Thank you in advance,

You need to check the vent in the cap on your vro oil tank. If pressure builds up in it when sitting you'll get the prob you have.

OK, the vent on the fill cap doesn't seem to move... it's doesn't look like the screw in / out type that I have on the fuel cap... it's smooth with a V on the top... how can I tell if it's open or closed? It looks like it maybe just pops up and down but it doesn't move at all? Maybe it's stuck? I hate to pry on it, don't want to break it.

This may be the right track though. I'm pretty sure the primer bulb on the oil line required no pumping, it was hard as a rock which surprised me after sitting for so long.

Two choices. If the tank is out of the weather drill a small hole in it to vent it or replace the cap.
