I picked up another 1985 90HP last night, good compression, free of corrosion and what looks to be a brand new lower unit and prop.
The only concern is that the VRO is apparently bypassed or blocked off and it was running on premixed fuel. The last owner said his 'mechanic buddy' disconnected it since VRO never works. My question is, can it run safely with just the oil lines plugged off and the wires unplugged?
If all the parts are there I'd be all for putting it back to original, but I think the metal manifold tube is missing. The rest all looks to be ok, the VRO pump even looks new, like they were fooling around with it and gave up. The motor shows no signs of ever having any trouble, but it's had a few home grown repairs which I suppose were done by his so called mechanic. It's got a touch of wiring disease and the controls were hardwired with butt connectors bypassing the red connector. They put on a new rectifier, but left the old one still in place and just found a new location to add the new one then simply clipped the wires off the old one. It wasn't running when I found it, but after swapping out the harness and cleaning up the wires it started and runs good, the compression is 129 even on all four and by looking at the fuel in the tank, they were pretty liberal with the oil, I'd guess that they were running it with at least double the needed oil. The gas in the tank is dark green with WAY too much oil. I got the impression that they never really got this thing to the water and gave up, which was probably a good thing in that they didn't get a chance to ruin the motor.
Anyone ever just disconnected the oil side of the VRO and run it that way?
Anyone got any good pics of an 1985 with the VRO pump all still intact?
My other 1985 already had the VRO removed when I got it.
