First of all thanks to the folks that make this bulletin board a real success. Lots of good info here for us rookies, best I've seen!

.
I'm in the process of powering up from a 1989 20hp Merc. (that works just fine thanks but doesn't plane with my fat fishin buddies) to 40hp (the max rating for my 16 foot Misty River Aluminum boat). I'm considering a 1992-40hp Johnson 2 banger with VRO to get me down my lake a little quicker. I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling about the VRO though after I read all the previous posts on the topic to this bulletin board. Is it really the liability you guys seem to make it out as? I also feel the quote to install motor and controls is steep at $400 (Canadian) but probably don't appreciate all the work involved. Any comments much appreciated.

------------------
A bad day Fishin is a lot better than a good day doin somethin else!

Re: VRO Shy -comments?

Personaly I don't have a problem with the straight ratio oil injection. The great majority of engine failures blamed on a VRO really wasn't a VRO problem. A lot of times an engine will have a problem with one cylinder and the rest are fine. A VRO can't pick on one cylinder and leave the rest perfect. Sometimes the oil tank gets water in it. I always tell people to do whatever you are comfortable with. If you have a bad feeling then disconnect it. Without question.
As far as the cost goes thats not too bad if it indeed includes the cost of controls and the dealer props it out.
Good luck!

I strongly recommend upgrading from VRO to the 50:1 oil pump. Start with an empty oil tank, use good oil and make sure ALL the alarms are working. Insist your dealer explain the different horn functions.
Good luck!

PS -- make sure they set it up to turn 5800 with your AVERAGE load.
