My V6 1985 XP 150 is giving me a low oil warning. When I checked the oil tank it was low. I filled the tank, still have the low oil warning.

The light on the tach shows low oil, the horn still beeps. I disconnected the wires from the oil tank and I still get the warning on the tach and the warning horn.

Does this mean I have a bad tach, (which don't work), or do I have a bad warning horn?

DoferGofer,

Hook the tank back up. I think it may be your tach., but why risk an expensive engine.

Also, service your tank by replacing the sock and making sure you float level indicator is working.

Remember to run 50:1 in your fuel supply until you make sure you are using oil from the injection unit.

Did you just install the System Check tach, or was this a working system that just sounded the alarm. 1985 low oil sensor not compatable with System Check tach.

Re: VRO, system check and warning horn

The system check tach is OEM for my 2003 Key West 19 ft. Center console fishing boat. I installed my 1985 150 XP on the new boat. I used the conversion wiring interface provided by OMC. The VRO and VRO tank are new, the VRO is the new four wire VRO and the tank is also brand new along with all new hoses, oil and fuel.

The System check tach worked fine, until the tach stopped working and VRO tank got low on oil.

Now the signal will not go away.

PS. I converted the 1985 engine to the four wire VRO, which should work with the system check, in fact it did until the tach went haywire.

If the boat is a 2003, isn't it still under warranty? I would take it to the dealer you bought it from and get that tach replaced. I have had a couple of gauge issues on my 2000 Mako and I just go to the dealer, at least until the warranty is up, that's what it's for right. Good Luck.

Re: VRO, system check and warning horn

Did your new oil tank have a black and brown wire with a plastic rectangular 2-wire connector with a red rubber seal ring around it? If so, that is the correct tank for the System Check.

With your light staying on and the horn going off with the oil tank disconnected, then the gauge is probably faulty. However, one of the tan wires (I can't remember which color stripe for low oil) may be shorted to ground somewhere.

The new tank has a black and brown wire. The brown wire has a small black strip in it and the connector is as you describe.

When I installed the tank and before it was filled with oil, I turned the ign. switch to the on position and it gave me the low oil light.

I turned the tank upside down and the low oil light went out. Therefore, it seemed to work initially.

The light stays on but the horn does not beep with the wires un-hooked. However, the low oil light burn and the horn will sound if the wires are hooked up with the motor is running
