my vro tank is part # 174167 will a newer tank work part # is 0177284

yes it will, your old part number has been superseded to 177284. check out this website http://www.usboatsupply.com just click on johnson/evinrude>>parts by catalog, make sure you allow the pop ups. you can use the get price window to cross reference part numbers.

probably nothing wrong with the old one, however i have a 1987 mako
with a 1987 110 johnson, with 110 original hours, my oil tank is under
my center console, hard to get to, noticed my bulb is hard as a rock
not that i cant replace it, but i want to relocate it to the rear
under a corner seat, maybe i will use the old one with new hose
and bulb, just thought to get a new one, i know these are
finicky

Those bulbs should be hard as a rock from my experiance. Mine is on my 90 hp Johnson.
