Hi, i have a bad VRO pump and i want to convert it to a fuel pump. I have read a ton of post on how to do it, and it sound really easy but i still have a couple questions. From the post that i have looked at it seems like all i have to do is hook the gas line from the gas tank to the pump and from the pump to the carbs. This doesn't seems to make sense to me. What does the pump run on it has to be electric or a vacuum right??? Can i just order a pump for my make and model engine and put it on?

I have a 1986 Johnson 50 HP.

Re: VRO to fuel pump conversion. Couple more questions

All of the VRO, OMS and conventional lift pumps are mechanical and work from the pulse created by the alternating vacuum and compression created by the movement of one of the pistons. The pulse moves a membrane in the pumps which opens and closes small valves.

The wiring on the VRO/OMS systems is for the warning/alarm system.

why then do they say on some of the other post that you can just plug the pulse hose if you want to run a fuel pump instead of a VRO. Also the diagram of the fuel pump needed for my motor only has two places where a hose can be attached. I assume the one is for the gas line form the tank and the other connects to the carbs.

Re: VRO to fuel pump conversion. Couple more questions

Some conventional lift pumps bolt directly over a hole in the manifold for a pulse while others use a hose; in no case is there no pulse or the pump could not function.

The VRO/OMS pumps consist of two sections; you can easily block the oil side and the gasoline side will function normally.

In that condition adding the oil to the gasoline (premix) will provide the necessary lubrication. I have one that I converted over fifteen years ago that is still working flawlessly.
