Wake Skate vs Wake Boarding

I just learned about Wake Skating. The only difference from wake boarding I'm aware of is no Bindings.

So I'm a Proficient salom skier. Should I try Wake Boarding or Wake Skating?

Keep in mind my boat in sig is a ski boat.

Thanks.

Wake skate is more wipeout-friendly.
Hook an edge and you just take a dive. Wakeboard bindings I've used tend not to release so well.

Wakeskate isn't very jump friendly, wakeboarding is a lot easier. I've never had an issue with any sort of wakeboard bindings releasing - tough part on some of the older ones is getting them on.

I think I will forget about wake skating. That is for the young kids to face plant themselve. Thanks for the comments.

LOL - the face plants are a lot harder on a wakeboard. With a wake skate your face doesn't get the extra "power assist" into the water that you get with a wakeboard.

Wake skating is very fun - liberating to just be standing on a board like surfing/skating vs in bindings.

Wipeouts are very mild and its very fun at slower speeds. Fun to just carve up the wake, wakeslides, surface 180's, cross wake, etc. Good for people like me who have hit head (TKO'd) to many times wakeboarding and need to 'stay on the water'....

I wouldn't do just one or other.... both a very fun. Can snag a used wakeskate for dirt cheap!

Wakeskating does not need a really large wake. That's one advantage for it with a ski boat. Lots of people skate behind jetskis. Skateboarding is similar to the type of tricks you are doing. The good wakeskates are much better than the cheap ones that you look at and think, "I should try that". It is something my kids tried and the board never gets used anymore.
You should be able to get a good wake with your boat for boarding. Get a bunch of friends, put them all in the bow, trim up 25% as you as the boat gets to speed and drive at about 19 on a GPS.

I have wakeboarded for this past 6 years, but picked up a wakeskate this winter. I hope to try it this weekend or the next. It it will keep me from having to help the kids get into wakeboard boots it will be worth the money!

It looks fun and different. I am also hoping it will be a more comfortable platform to barefoot off of than my kneeboard (since I am too fat for my barefoot wetsuit for deep water starts).

Hahahaha! Ain't that the truth!

I had a very hard time the first time that I used a wake skate, and I skateboarded and wakeboarded for years. My crazy friend could pull a pop shovit like a demon! The only thing that I hated was that no matter how good someone is on those things, I have never seen any one land any huge air. The extra surface of the wakeboard makes it a lot easier to land tricks.

Re: Wake Skate vs Wake Boarding

I know pros can get major airtime on wakeskates, so it's possible. That's expert level though.

Catching an awkward edge on a wakeboard is a painful experience. That's one of the reasons why I almost strictly wakeskate now. I'm kind of tall and lanky, so when I catch an edge I slam into the water pretty hard and get a major headache the rest of the day.

Although wakeskating has its own unique dangers too. One time I went off the wake and tried to do a kickflip or something, and landed in the water with the board between my legs. Luckily I clamped down on it in time, otherwise that would have been some serious pain.

How in the heck do you get up on a Wake Skate anyway? Thanks for the replies.

I took the bindings off an old wakeboard, installed some traction tape to the board...instant cheap wakeskate. It's a little longer than a wakeskate so getting up is even easier. We pull it about 12 mph and have a ball. The falls don't hurt because of the low speed. I think it's way more comfortable than having my feet clamped into wakeboard bindings. Try it!
