Re: Wake Skate vs Wake Boarding

Tried it this weekend. I got up, my son got up (both wakeboard) and we got a 12 year old friend of my son's up too (he has never wakeboarded or skied).

Its different! Its more slippery than a wakeboard. However, falling does not hurt as bad as there are no edge catch face plants!

I did jump wake to wake, landed on the board, but did not ride it out.

I definitely can fly much higher on the wakeboard. However, its fun, but different.

Get both!

PS: It is a hell of a lot easier to store without the boots on it.

Good stuff. Did you get a board with foam or griptape? The foam is cool because you can just casually jump on it even without shoes, but the traction is not so good, so it's easier to fall off. With griptape you have to wear shoes and you can scrape your knees and ankles pretty easy on the surface, but you do get way more control.

To the OP: you can pick up a used wakeskate for like $40. I suggest trying it because it's a lot of fun without much investment into buying all kinds of equipment. Look on Craigslist for wakeskates.

I got one with a foam top. A friend who we took boating gave me a gift card to a marine store, so I only had to pony up a little more to get one on sale.

OK, its nothing great, but here is our first outing with it:

The first person is my son. He got to where he could get up on a wakeboard every time and sometimes cross the wake towards the end of last year. The 2, 3, and 4th person is one of his friends who never wakeboarded or wakeskated before. The last guy is yours truly, an old fart on his second try.

They are fun to play with on the lake. Since you don't get big air with them you can slow the boat and enjoy trying to do tricks on them - or even just stay up. :) They fit anyone's feet are easy to store in the boat if you don't have a tower, you can easily use them behind jetski's. If they have skate tape on top you can wear old running shoes and if they are foam top go bare feet.
