Re: Wakeboarding Boat Musts?!

Me and my crew (my adult kids, that is) are novice wakeboarders and my reports only apply to our experiences. We are just learning to stand behind a boat on a wakeboard and size and depth of wake seems like such a far away concern at this point! But the OP asked about getting on plane, my response still stands for my setup that I got better performance to get on plane, I cant justify other variables.

Re: Wakeboarding Boat Musts?!

Hydrofoil destroyed my steering/handling when I tried that...was removed wtihin a week. And I later learned that Smart Tabs will DESTROY a good wakeboarding wake. This is their only downfall as they do everything else very very well. I put the Smart Tabs on my last boat and the wake washed out so bad it just about disappeared. They were outstanding products for skiing and improving holeshot, also improving ride characteristics and didn't hurt my steering like the foil did. I was a big promoter of these products. But then we got into wakeboarding. For that they simply had to be kicked up out of the way, which unfortunately took away all their holeshot and lower-speed planing benefits.

Based on my experiences with both, before doing any Smart tabs or hydrofoil in seeking this improvement, I'd recommend anyone focus on the prop. 4 or 5 blades will make a big difference over 3. Generally speaking, they improve hole-shot and mid-speed handling/low speed planing. And you should aim for a lower pitch that allows the boat to reach or even very slightly exceed the max RPM at WOT.

For example: If your boat is rated at 4,400 to 4,800, you need to strive for that 4,800...and if your boat seems underpowered it wouldn't hurt to close in on even 4,900 to 5,000..with the understanding that you should rarely run at top speed to prevent damage or excessive wear.

Whereas if you're currently propped closer to 4,400 at top speed, you are very much overpropped for watersports, and are leaving a LOT of said watersports performance that your boat is probably capable of on the table.

People forget that these are almost ALL small block Chevys...their bottom ends can FAR exceed 5,000 rpms with NO damage quite happily (ask any hot-rodder or racer...they run these exact same blocks at 6,000+ rpms all day long), and the outdrives are generally rated to handle 5,000 rpms. So you won't hurt anything if you keep up with maintenance and overspin them a touch, but you will likely burn a little more gas. And I do NOT recommend running full throttle very often if you are propped this way.

Re: Wakeboarding Boat Musts?!

I have a hydrofoil, the SE sport 300 on a similar sized boat. The previous owner put it on because he could not hold plane at slower speeds. I have seen no good reason to take it off. He was trying to hold plane with a 23 pitch aluminum. This was not the right prop for water sports, but I can hit 55 MPH with it!

I have two props I use. I have mostly used a 20 pitch 4 blade aluminum. I get great hole shot and great towing with it.

I recently moved up to a 23 pitch Merc Hi five. The hole shot is even better, but my cruising speed is now even better too.

With the 20 pitch, if I drove across the lake at 30 MPH the gas gauge really seemed to drop. I don't have this problem, and still have great hole shot with the hi 5.

Also, the stainless steel does seem to hold speed better than the aluminum.

Re: Wakeboarding Boat Musts?!

We have a 05 Tahoe Q4 with 190hp V6. We got the tower also. I put a dol-fin on it before we put it on the water the first time. We put about 800 pounds of ballast in it. This summer, I took the foil off, just to see if it would change the shape of the wake. It was almost impossible to plane without it. It also took alot more driver input to keep it going straight and keep a constant speed. HYDROFOIL IS A MUST. We also tried the cheap four blade prop, and were happy with the improvements, though not near as dramatic as the foil.

The merc high five digs, we have one on our rinker 262 ci v6...you can feel it
dig, lol.....its a bit harder to tow a wakeboard without a tower, it depends on the boarder.....
